Japanese news website Anime! Anime! conducted a survey with a question of “What is your favorite sci-fi anime?” and out of many sci-fi anime that we have, 11 of them entered the Top 10. Why 11? You will also know as you read this article.

This is to commemorate the International Space Year happened last September 12, 1992 when astronaut Mamoru Mohri flew into space for the first time on the Space Shuttle. Let’s see on how the Japanese responded to this question.

To start the countdown, four anime tied for the top 8 spots. Some of these are anime titles like World Trigger, Summer Wars, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, and Space Battleship Yamato.

Four anime also tied for the top 4 spots. Some of these are well -known anime titles such as The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Godzilla Singular Point, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.

Entering the top 3 is the so-called hidden gem sci-fi anime of 2019, Astra Lost In Space which got good marks from various anime reviewers due to its unique plot.

The highly-popular sci-fi time travel anime “STEINS; GATE” hit the top 2 with a rating of 9.1 based on the anime database website myAnimeList.net

And finally, the top 1 sci-fi anime based on Japanese respondents is none other than the anime “GinTama” whose final movie has just been released in theaters in Japan just this year. The release of the said movie also marks the end of the GinTama anime that has been airing for more than one and a half decade in Japan.
Anime! Anime! received responses from 145 random people during the survey period from August 29 to September 5, 2021. Out of 145 people, 40% of the respondents are male while 60% of it are female. In terms of age demographics, about 35% of the respondents are 19 years old and/or younger and about 30% were in their 20s.
